Can Reiki Healers 'catch' illnesses from a patient?
Assuming that general Health and Safety guidelines are being observed, common sense will rein and you will need to watch out for instances of cross contamination of your bed and bedding, etc. Purely from the point of view of exchange of energy, you are not 'taking' anything from the client. You are purely channelling Reiki energy in one direction - nothing else. However, because we work in a person's aura and as our empathy and awareness of senses develops, some practitioners may find that they sense ailments on their bodies that they know are not their own and relate heavily with the client. In these instances, the mind can be a powerful tool and if you are not mindful, you may start to find that the ailments are adopted by you and made your own. For this reason, you should always have a very clear picture of how you feel and the state of your own health before seeing your client. Be very positive in your work and confident that you are trying to help a person self-heal, you are not going to adopt or agree to 'take on' anything to do with the client. This way, you are creating a distance between yourself and your life and the client and theirs. You could call it a mental barrier. You are still able to give treatments unhindered to help clients without the necessity to take on board their troubles as well. Sometimes practitioners may find it difficult to maintain a positive and confident outlook and in these instances they can always use a Protection Exercise. These are not as scary as they may sound and again are purely mental exercises to help create a stronger mental barrier between you and your clients which then helps to disassociate yourself with these foreign ailments.
