It is OK to omit or adapt any of the basic hand positions when I give myself a treatment?

The twelve basic positions are merely guidelines that have been designed to assist, not hinder you, so if you feel the need to deviate from them, do so.  You may, for example, at times feel you would rather spend more time treating one part of your body and miss another part out.  Alternatively, some of the positions may be uncomfortable for you (the back and shoulder positions in particular can provide difficult for some of us).  If this is the case, then adapt them to suit yourself.  For example, spend double time on your chest position if the upper back position is proving problematic.  Remember, giving yourself a Reiki treatment should never cause you distress and the energy is always channelled to the area it is most required in your system.

Another basis principle to remember is that even if you have only 15 minutes or half an hour to spare one day, rather than an hour, giving yourself a small amount of Reiki energy is better than none at all.  Always try to keep in contact with the energy on a regular basis.
