What is Reiki - Reiki History - Reiki Training - Reiki Practitioners (Beginners) - Reiki Practitioners (Advanced)
Unfortunately, society is driven by the clock - we eat at certain times, go to sleep at certain times, and find we have to get up at certain times (or run the risk of losing our jobs!) even if we aren't ready to do these things - so it isn't surprising that people may fall asleep as soon as we give them an opportunity to become horizontal during their otherwise busy day.
There are people that claim that this is the evidence of the presence of Reiki but, from experience, it is normally because the person is actually tired.
While relaxation certainly can be one of the goals of a Reiki session, it can be beneficial if the person stays awake.
Many of my patients have gained a great deal of comfort from their experiences while receiving Reiki - which are sometimes missed when asleep. Hot and cold sensations over painful parts of the body, states of deep meditation which helps people to gain clearer minds and many other experiences have all been stated by patients that stay awake.
The patient can also participate in directing the flow of Reiki energy for his/her benefit. When Reiki is given, the energy will normally go directly to the areas in the patient's body that needs it - providing the patient's body is willing to accept it in the first place. But if the patient is also consciously directing the energy to the areas they know require it, the patient can take responsibility for directing ki during the session.
Of course, don't prevent a patient from sleeping - they probably need to rest and will benefit just as much from the session - but eventually, as patients get used to the treatment, they will start to find that they can stay awake if they want to and participate by directing the energy to the areas the body needs.
