Why do we turn a person over in a Reiki treatment?

Reiki 1 teaches hand positions for treating another person.  The student is shown how to treat the front of the body and then turns the client over to treat the back of the body.

This procedure is taught for a number of reasons:

  • It ensures the student is familiar with the standard hand positions, they get used to dealing with a client (and how to turn a client over!), they also learn how to give a full treatment and they learn the correct procedure that has been taught for many, many years

  • It gives the student confidence that they have a set procedure they can follow instead of immediately relying on their intuition or instincts - something they have probably never been asked to do before

  • The client feels they are getting a full body treatment and 'value for money'

  • Energy can be transferred purely by touch, so no matter where the practitioner's hands are placed the energy will still go to where it needs it the most.  However, when a student first starts Reiki, the energy they channel will be weak and the energy may need some assistance to get to the spot that requires it.

  • It gives the student a chance to start to recognise where energy is going into the body from the sensations the student experiences.  Therefore they get more information from doing a full front and back treatment and are able to target specific areas much more effectively.

After learning Reiki 2 onwards however, it isn't always necessary to turn a person over in their treatment unless the practitioner feels they need to.  Reiki 2 asks for the student to call on their instincts and to go with their intuition more in terms of what hand positions they feel the client needs but still being able to go back to the standard treatment any time they want to.
